The mural commissioned for the Black Book Community Library takes Lewisham’s Black History Trailblazers map as its starting point. Instead of portraits, the borough is drawn entirely in words: every neighbourhood spelled out in hand-lettered type, from Deptford and New Cross in the north to Sydenham and Beckenham Place Park in the south, the whole shape of Lewisham built from the places that make it. Behind it, the Pan-African colours move in sweeping bands from green at the top through gold to deep red, framed by geometric patterns drawn from Kente textile tradition. The effect roots the map in something older and wider than the borough boundaries: a visual language that connects Lewisham to a much larger story. It is a fitting introduction to a collection that does the same thing in print.
