Calico Deptford
Artist Butch Attai has created a series of permanent murals on the exterior of Calico’s Deptford studio building, drawing on the remarkable history of the area just beyond the studio door. Spanning three ground floor shutters and the rooftop, the work weaves together Deptford stories across the centuries: Francis Drake and the Golden Hind, moored just metres away in 1580; Peter the Great’s mulberry tree, planted at nearby Sayes Court as an apology for some legendary misbehaviour; the skull and crossbones of St Nicholas Church, rumoured inspiration for the Jolly Roger; and a fin whale caught in the Thames in 1842. The highlight is the anamorphic whale on the rooftop plant box, painted to appear as though it is floating freely above the building when viewed from the right spot on the street. Butch Attai is a London-based artist working across painting, illustration and street art. You can find more of his work at @butchattai on Instagram.
