A snapshot exhibition of Chinese calligraphy and brush art at Forest Hill Library Flowing Ink & Dancing Brush grew out of a project that began at Forest Hill Library in 2022, when Carry Hornby started exploring the story of Chinese words as a way to promote cultural diversity and inclusion in the local community. As the project developed, its focus shifted to the practice of Chinese calligraphy itself, and the profound effect of brush and ink on the mind. Slow, deliberate and deeply meditative, calligraphy offers a way to calm a racing mind and cultivate a genuine state of mindfulness, benefits that Carry has shared through workshops at churches, schools, universities, community halls, art galleries and libraries across South East London. This snapshot exhibition showcases the beauty of calligraphy as a creative art form, and invites visitors to discover its potential as a practice for mental wellbeing.
