Internal Landscapes is a socially engaged art project rooted in a simple but powerful question: what are the places in Lewisham that inspire and shape the people who live here? Initiated as part of Lewisham’s year as London Borough of Culture, artist-curator Dima Karout spent over a year in creative residence, visiting community libraries, hosting curated conversations and bringing together more than 100 individuals and 25 local organisations. Drawing on neurologist Boris Cyrulnik’s research into how our environments shape who we are, the project set out to map the borough not by its differences, but by its shared spaces and shared stories. Through workshops combining storytelling, creative writing, printmaking and sketching, and in collaboration with poets and writers Tyrone Lewis and Bex Gordon, participants created a collective narrative about Lewisham: an emotional map of the borough, in a moment in time. The resulting exhibition brings together artwork, text and narratives that reveal the layers, beauty and complexity of Lewisham’s social fabric. Produced in partnership with the Horniman Museum and Gardens and supported by Arts Council England and the Greater London Authority, Internal Landscapes is as much about the process as the outcome, a testament to what becomes possible when a community is invited to speak, and genuinely listened to. Internal Landscapes is currently on display across Calico Libraries: Manor House, Sydenham and Crofton Park. Free to visit during library opening hours.
