The People’s Patchwork is a community textile artwork made by residents of the London Borough of Lewisham. Coordinated by the Lewisham Libraries Community Engagement team, the project invited people to contribute a single fabric patch — each one a personal response to the question: “If you had one patch to tell a story, what story would you tell?” Patches were created by members of the public across 2014, through workshops and drop-in sessions held at libraries and community spaces across the borough. In 2015, the community came together again to sew the patches into a single completed work. The finished patchwork is accompanied by a soundscape created by Lewisham-based sound artist Jay Harris, composed entirely from sounds recorded around the borough. The work toured Lewisham’s libraries and community venues throughout 2016 and 2017 before finding its permanent home in the foyer of Manor House Library, where it remains on display today.
