Launched in July 2025 at Sydenham Library, the Black Book Community Library is a dedicated reference collection of contemporary works by Black British authors. It came about when the good people of the Black British Book Festival were looking for a permanent home for a collection that celebrated and documented the richness of Black British writing. Calico Projects, with its deep roots in the community and its commitment to accessible, welcoming library spaces, was a natural partner. The collection sits in its own dedicated space within Sydenham Library and spans the full range of literary forms: fiction and memoir, poetry and prose, books for children and adults, readers of all ages and tastes. Some names will be immediately familiar, Marcus Rashford, Percival Everett, David Harewood, while others are less well known but no less worthy of discovery. Blockbusters and cult classics, bestsellers and hidden gems sit side by side, making the collection as much a journey of discovery as a reference resource. Lewisham is the most diverse borough in the whole of England, and the Black Book Community Library reflects that. It is a library within a library, a celebration of the depth and strength of Black writing in Britain and beyond, and another compelling reason to visit your wonderful local library. Calico Projects is proud to give it a home.
